Hello,

I got my offer for the above mentioned course at UNSW yesterday night. During the online acceptance process they indicated that I need to choose a major. I am aware of the majors before but never thought had to decide so early... Just wondering if anyone is also doing/done EnvSc and which majors will/did you choose? Of course taking in consideration of future career aspects.

Thanks

The Handbook is your friend. It is pretty vague but it'll go though the stuff you need to know and give you an idea of what courses you need to take (very important):

http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2012/3988.html

If you scroll down, you can see "Specialisations". Those are the majors you can pick. Next to them are links, and if you click on the one you want, you'll see exactly what courses you need to do - to graduate with the degree you want.

I'm not sure if you actually have to choose a major so early, but looking at the courses you'll need to do may help you decide better.

I think you have a year or two to decide what you want to major in

Okay then look at the link I made to the Handbook entry and roam around there. See what you like.

The thing is, when I log in myUNSW and accept the course into EnvSc, one of the steps is to choose a major. I will not be able to proceed with accepting the offer unless I choose a major. Is that whats happening to you or is its only for me...

No it happened to me as well, it's part of the enrollment

Just consider what kind of scientist you want to be
If marine biologist/scientist then do the marine science major
If you like biology then do the biology or microbiology major
If you like chemistry then do the chemistry major
etc. etc.

That is not to say that when you graduate you must go into the field you majored in. Just choose the one you think will bring you a highest WAM and can aid you appropriately in your future endeavours

Remember also throughout the course you have 1 major, but you also select a few units from at least one other major.
So you'll get a good amount of knowledge from 1+ of the disciplines and won't be 'locked into' one major.

Yea when I checked on Seek.com.au there were heaps jobs for EnvSc but none really specified which specialisation you need. I think I will stick with geography as it has subjects that explores land, atmosphere, rivers and stuff. Thanks for the help guys.
