This question is from the 2001 HSC exam.

Explain why it is essential to monitor the temperature and pressure inside the reaction vessel. (3 marks)

To achieve an optimum yield of ammonia it is essential to ensure that the temperature and pressure inside the reaction vessel are monitored. To increase the yield of ammonia chemists are able to decrease the temperature where the reaction is occurring, however in doing this it also slows down the rate of reaction. A suitable balance must there be maintained between the highest yield and efficiency.

By increasing the pressure of the system a higher yield of ammonia can be achieved but this will also lower the reaction rate. Higher pressures also make it difficult to maintain equipment at industry standard levels.

It is therefore essential to monitor the temperature and pressure inside the reaction vessel in order to maintain safety levels and to achieve the highest yield of ammonia possible.

you need to put the chemical reaction including states and the equilibrium sign

you also need to put in appropriate values as given in your textbook

Had you included the chemical reaction with states and eq sign. A 3/3. My chemistry teacher said. make the chemistry paper look like chemistry i.e Always write down reactions with states whenever possible.

Without the equation 2/3.

Yeh just put in the reaction and shove the world equilibrium somewhere in there

should talk about the catalyst. also, according to my matrix teacher, another reason the temp can't be too high (despite its ror vs yield trade off) is becoz high temp will damage the catalyst, limiting its effectiveness.

btw. high pressure will increase the rate of reaction .....(not lower the rate of reaction) because molecules are packed closer and therefore more reactions are likely to occur.

Make reference to good man Le CHatlier, always makes you sound like a gun!
