Math Ext 2 - Is it worth it? (1 Viewer)

Hi all, I am currently in year 11 and considering picking up extension 2 math. I do very well in both adv and ext currently and I enjoy doing math. Just wondering how hard it is and the overall work load. Also would it be worth it to take 13 units into the HSC or should I consider dropping SOR I? let me know!

In my experience the work load isn't too bad and it's difficulty jump from x1 is about the same as the jump as from advanced to x1. If you're enjoying math and doing very well in x1 it sounds like you'd enjoy and do well in x2 as well.
As for 13 units, it depends on how you feel about your workload and your subjects (although 13 is quite a lot but if you like all your subjects it's probably worth it)

I feel the jump from ext 1 to 2 is a big jump if im being honest. I find ext 1 relatively easy but ext 2 is the bane of my existence

I second this, math extension 2 for me is really rewarding however 13 units is really hard from what I hear especially with the work required for MXX
I'd say if you really enjoy the more abstract parts of math, then go for it - for example, if you don't like mathematical induction, then MXX would be tedious in the proofs topics and honestly complex might also not be your cup of tea
But it really differs from person to person, I love complex and proofs and hate integration but my friends love integration and hate proofs

guys how hard should i be working to get into ext 2 considering i got my first mark back for ext 1 and it was a 71% (the teacher is doing a remarking of all papers so i might get higher - not confident tho)?

the teacher said we shouldnt judge our ability based on the first paper bc its perms and combs and its not linked to any other topic
anyways, should i be doing 2hrs every day of ext 1? should i put more emphasis on ext than adv? do you guys think a 70% throughout is good enough for ext 2 or should i aim for minimum 80%?
also im dropping physics at the end of yr 11, would that affect me in any way?

(note: if i do continue w ext 2 im aiming to do the following subjects: 4u math, eng adv, bio and eco - so no chem or physics, is that 'stupid' to do?)

why tf would u drop phys if ur doing ext 2... mechs and phys go somewhat hand in hand; lots of stuff from phys is helpful for intuition for phys imo

idk how hard your papers are but in my school 70% is pretty goated, our averages usually sit between 45-60%
no chem or physics isn't 'stupid' - I don't do physics, and chem certainly isn't related - but if you are struggling with some concepts physics then MXX may be difficult in some aspects (but by no means should this be a deciding factor)

in 24 we got 3 e4 for mx2 (3 from a class of 4: the 4th got e3)
in 24 we got 4 e4 for mx1 (4 from a class of 7: the rest e3s only)

this yr we dont have a mx2 class and the mx1 has only two accelerated but they dont count (technically) bc they’re 26 cohort

Honestly, might be a hated opinion, but I would say only do ext 2 if you are really passionate at math. For me, I like math but am not really the most passionate so find ext 2 a bit of a grind as some questions take ages to comprehend. If you not that passionate adv math its probably better as you can just grind questions on adv and get great marks which is pretty easy imo if you are half decent at algebra. By all means if your passionate about math, choose ext 2,or if you just want a challenge do it and you can always drop.

tbh I think it is how you find the subject. for me I usually just 'study' any work I didn't finish in class which is usually 30mins a day but I find maths comes a little be easier than other subjects. i don't think u should set goals to work on math for a certain amount of time but rather focus on ur understanding and stuff. usually for my exam prep i look through things i don't feel confident about then onto things i do rather than just grinding out a bunch of questions in a set amount of time.

in terms of 70% idrk each school is different my math ext class avg is in the 60s but it just depends on how hard ur tests are and stuff

i think if u enjoy maths why not. from what i have gathered from the the other posts on this thread if ur good at math and enjoy it u should try math ext 2, like other said u can just drop it if it does not work out.

also how do u cope with 13 units? do u think it is doable?

Fun fact i do 15 units lmooooo

i recently dropped the language course i was taking (even tho im still on the role) but yes it was very durable
i dont have a study plan (n rlly need one) so what i would do is listen in class
especially for biology i DID NO work throughout and just focused in class and ended w an 81%
some subjects need to be practice like math, chem and ohysics but overall the tip is to listen in class

im not gonna put unnecessary stress or waste time
if i dont end up with ext 2 math im gonna drop both ext 1 math and physics so ill end with:
eng adv, math adv, bio, chem and eco

yes bc why would i do an extra unit and it wont count towards my atar? extra work and for what?
tbh if i do fuck one of my hscs itll be fine lmao i do high scaling subjects + half of my mark is internals anyways
i can work extremely hard in internals and then fuck up the hsc its ok (for me at least)
