hi, I am a S2 2006 student and so I will be taking math1131 for this coming semester but I noticed a problem.. I would have to continue with math1231/1241 for my next semester which is S1 2007 but these subjects are only offered during S2 2007! So does that mean I have to stay for the summer session this year to catch up?

Is math1231 or 1241 a pre-requisite for any of the core 2nd year computing modules?

I was hoping that I could just take math1231/1241 during S2 2007 so I can return to my country during summer break :(

When you say computing modules, I presume you mean subjects with the prefix of COMP?

If so, then MATH1231/1241 are not pre-requisties at all. For 2nd year COMP Courses the first year comp courses (COMP1911/1921 etc) are the pre-requisties.

For specific information on course pre-requisties, check out the unsw handbook (www.handbook.unsw.edu.au)

For example
http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/courses/2006/COURSE.html

and change COURSE to "COMP2011" for instance, to get straight to the COMP2011 handbook page.

Yep I meant those courses with the "comp" prefix. I am just worried that when they mention in the handbook "Year 1 courses" it means I HAVE to finish those courses within the first year, ie. the first 2 semesters. But if say I can still take those courses out of the first year then it shouldn't be a problem.

You can take any course you want at any time you want, as long as you meet the pre-requisties of a course.

Do not feel obliged to do a course in 1st year if its called a first year course, similarly don't feel that you have to do a 3rd year course in your 3rd year of studies if its called a third year course, etc.

Hope this info helps.

In the end, all that matters is that you have done the courses for your degree, the order of doing the courses is not *necessarily* important besides for pre-req purposes.
