I am currently doing fairly well in Maths Ext1. Should I take Maths Ext 2. What if I am only in the average of that class?

Make sure you have very high marks in Ext1 already, I recall someone no longer became a normal person after doing Extension 2 ...

I've created this to hopefully stem the flow of "I'm in year 11, should I do 4u?" threads that have been coming into this forum of late.

Points to note:

1. Your 3u marks should be up around 70%. This is by no means set in stone, because of varying test difficulties etc, but if, for example, you're getting 40% in 3u I'd strongly advise you against 4u.
2. You should love maths. Nothing else, unless you are extremely talented, will give you enough motivation to get through this course.
3. You must be prepared to give a substantial amount of your study time to 4u (50+% of your study time should go to 3 and 4u study).
4. If your teacher says you're not 4u material, they're probably right.
5. If you can't get through the course without spending $100 a week on tutoring, don't do it.

FAQ
Is 4u hard?
Yes.
Is it rewarding?
Yes.
Will I have to have early morning/late afternoon classes?
Depends on your school, but if you're at a selective school or a school with a lot of people then probably not.
Does 4u scale well?
Only if you work hard. Doing a subject just for the scaling is never a good idea.

If anyone wants to suggest anything else to add to this thread just post it underneath.
1. My marks were from 30% to 60%
2. No I dont love maths
3. But I haveto say goodbye to dedicated study for my other 2U subjects :(
4. Never said, but I know I aint 4U material myself
5. No tutoring k thanks.

My Verdict:

I will not be doing Extension 2 k thnx :D

In Mathematics Extension 2, you will do 8 topics. They are:
- Graphs: sketching graphs beyond the Extension 1 course
- Complex Numbers: involves manipulating imaginary and real numbers
- Conics: mainly involves studying ellipses and hyperbolae in detail
- Integration: extends beyond Extension 1 integration with new techniques
- Volumes: involves finding volumes of solids by applying and manipulating calculus
- Mechanics: is mainly physical calculus and investigation of motion and forces
- Polynomials: extends beyond Extension 1 polynomials with complex polynomials
- Harder Extension 1: speaks for itself
Research and have a closer insight into the course. In the Mathematics Extension 2 exam there will always be some random harder Extension 1 questions. Unfamiliar questions (Component B in the syllabus) involving logical and critical thinking are more prevalent in Extension 2 than Extension 1.
Just because you're doing well in Extension 1, doesn't mean that you always do well in Extension 2. I, for one, am doing better in Extension 2 than Extension 1 at the moment because all these non-Extension 2 students can devote their time to only Extension 1 and 2 unit (which are closely linked), whereas I have to devote my time to Extension 1 AND Extension 2 (which are not as closely linked).

I only did Ext 2 maths for the scaling however people in my school consider me to have talent in maths throughout the years.
However, in year 11 i slacked off and my rankings completely bombed out and so i had to beg the maths coordinator to let me do 4 unit.
