Maths in an Arts course? (1 Viewer)

OK, I need two more units (1 per semester) to make up my required study units for the first year, and I am totally lost.

I have two units of English, History and Education (all required for the double degree), and I don't know what else to do. I don't particularly want to do Social Science courses (Geography, etc), and although learning Greek or something would be interesting, I don't know if I'm good at learning languages. Nothing else really appeals.

What would happen if I did a Maths subject in my B Education (Sec: Humanities & Social Sciences)/B Arts? Would that royally screw me over and not contribute to anything or what?

if they offer it and u want to do it then go for it. what's the difference between u choosing greek or ur choosing a maths subject? not much! i actually thought of doing greek too, but i've been advised not to. and to do something more "practical"

i think coz ur doing ENG as ur major, maybe u can do like all the ENGL subjects. plus maybe looking at more history subjects or even the religion ones. Coz u might end up teaching at a catholic school. Just my opinion, anyway.

coz im in the same predicament as u, and i dont know whether i want to do Film, Fiction & Power or a hist or religion subject.

but if nothing else interests u and u can and want to do a maths subject then go for it. it's probably just as useful or pointless as learning a language....

wait...well that depends on what u can do with it after, i guess.

if that didnt confuse u, then i hope i helped :)

I'm thinking of just specialising in English and doing the remaining two units for first year, but I'm worried that I'm losing options that way.

For ENGL 1005 Language and Image, it says it's going during Semesters 1 and 2. Does that mean if I choose it, it goes for two semesters, or I just do it once in either semester?

Originally, maths was usually only offered in an arts degree. Mathematics was considered to be on the same artistic level as poetry - the ihghest form of art and beauty.

By pure mathematicians this is still the case, but society in general has changed their mind, unfortunately.

Similarily, psychology, a science, can also be studied in arts, and philosophy, which is a mix of maths (logic) and art, can sometimes be studied in science.

There is no problem with you doing maths. It would "improve your critical thinking skills" as they say. Something employers look for.
