Hey Guys,

I'm doing a pretty hard problem from 4-unit Fitzpatrick on conical pendulum which I can't do. Any help would be appreciated.

One end of a light inelastic string of length 2 m is attached to a fixed point 2.5 m vertically above the centre of a fixed sphere of radius 1.5 m. A small ball, of mass 2 kg, at the other end of the string is made to rotate in a horizontal circle on the smooth surface of the sphere with a speed of 2 m/s. Show that the string must be taut and calculate the tension in it.
Find also the greatest speed at which the ball can move without losing contact with the sphere.

If someone tells me how to do the first part, I'll probably be able to figure out the second part but I really have no idea for the first part - how do you show that a string is taut?
