Hey,
I was just wondering if there is any real diffrence between med sci @ syd and the same course @ nsw besides the UAI. I mean, since syd has a medicine and dentistry school would it b easier to get into those courses if u went to syd or is there some equal opportunity thing. R there better teachers @ a particular uni, or better...err...students, no offence but i heard USyd ppl r arrogant...not my views, havnt had the oppurtunity to devlop those views yet but newayz.

UNSW or USyd
Thanks

-equal opportunity depends on how much u impress them with GAMSAT + Interview
-best candidate for the position.
-large UAI difference may reflect cohort competitiveness but again its variable... its not true in all courses.

UNSW Med Sc is more flexible. You would have the option to do Physics and maths (only 1 maths course is required), whereas your first year is all set out already in USyd - 2x Maths, chem physics, bio.

Hey, everyone. I know that this might sound a bit side-tracked, but how many majors can you choose for Bachelor of Medical Science in USYD or UNSW? Because as far as I know, you can choose only one major for medical science, and that's one disadvantage it has over other science/health science degrees, where you can choose two majors if you wish. Can you really choose only one major?

At UNSW Med Sc, you can major in:

Anatomy
Biochemistry
Molecular Biology
Biotechnology
Microbiology
Medical Microbiology and Immunology
Pathology
Pharmacology
Physiology

You can choose up to 2 majors. :)

Next year I am planning to do all Microbiology and Immunology subjects, which means my majors will be "Microbiology" and "Medical Microbiology and Immunology"

In medical Science you can bascially major in everything that has to do with medical sciences :D A major is chiefly consist of at least 3 prescribed Level III subjects and some prescribed Level II subjects. Say if you want to major in Pathology you would need to do 3 Level III PATH3XXX courses and 1 PATH2XXX course, which will form the basis of your major. This also means that you will have enough credits left to pick more of the same major subjects or another major. But whichever is up to you. Of course if you want to pick more subjects from your major area you will inevitably learn more and become more specialised in your single major area. Or if you have diverse interest, say Microbiology and physiology, then you can pick subjects from both and have 2 majors, but of course you won't be doing as much microbiology compared to someone who has a single major focusing on Microbiology only.

I hope this helps.

Hmm, thanks for the info.
I am more into diverse knowledge rather than specialising in one area. A statistic (I think I read in a UAC Guide) has it that most-or at least majority-of students choose two majors. It's effectively doing two courses with similar areas as far as I know, and can be advantageous for job prospect.
