Ok, this is to the fellow meds, particularly those who have left home to study. Now we know it's not an easy course, with lots of work, insane contact load etc but how do you manage to bring in the bacon? Do you work nights and weekends at Subway, do you leech or do you just live derelicte?

My situation is not that unusual. I live in college (food, utilities etc covered) and walk or cycle (across the road) to uni. My parents pay my college fees ($245 per week) as well as a $100 fortnightly allowance ($40 of that $100 goes to savings). Though the deal didn't stipulate this, my parents tend to reimburse me for big costs like textbooks. Out of my weekly $30 I pay for my internet (roughly $10), laundry ($6 but highly variable) and all incidentals.

Looking at it this way I have it really easy compared to many others. I can wake up ten minutes before a class and beat the clock, I don't have to work for my cash and I don't have to worry about bills. Of course, being a more traditional school I have more contact hours than others and SDL is a bitch. My parents justify the expense by the fact that it is really hard to work while in medical school (people tend not to hire you with such an inflexible timetable), I don't really cost much (no going out, drinking or movies to drain the cash) and that I am essentially their retirement fund. I keep the costs down by living more or less a monastic lifestyle and avoiding lunch outside college.

Well that's enough from me. Any other stories?

I even find while im at home studying, i find it very hard to work and study at the same time. I have a volunteer job on saturday once every fortnight and every other week, something seems to pop up (family gatherings etc. - be glad you dont have to go to them anymore rob!). My job really doesnt relate to my current studying, but it will. As you say, no one will hire you for only the weekend or odd hours because your timetable changes-they also want people with experience/proper qualifications to be working in a vet as a nurse. I find it had to study because i'm a 9-5er and by the time i get home im tired as and by the time i shower/dinner/get ready, before i know it its nearly 9 and i do harldy anything. I sometimes wonder how much easier things would be if i lived in college (btw, your college fees are cheap! usyd colledges are $380 pw). Expenditure on this course is so high. Books and equipment-you can never hace too many. I dont get any "pocket money" but if i ask for money, then i will be given it, but half of the time i feel guilty asking for it. I dont think centrelink has transferred my payment yet.
In all, everyone tells me i should find a job for money as opposed to volunteering, which is what i have been doing alot (the fortnightly job, dog shows etc.) because it seems like the only thing close enough to a job i can get. I wish someone would offer me a vet nursing job now :(

Apparently, that lack of money stops a lot of regional students from coming to the city to do medicine, Kim.

Personally, I know I'm going to be living off potatoes - fried, boiled, chipped, stewed, skewered, barbecued, mashed, baked; during my law degree.

My college fees are expensive by Perth standards. I am told that you can live on half of that if you rent your own place with a few friends etc (same deal in Sydney) but right now I think the convenience of college outweighs the enormous effort and time expended on saving the money.

That's what my mother was planning, until we realised that (except for JCU, Monash, Newcastle and Bond) all the medical schools are sandstone - id est in very old, very expensive suburbs.

Come on, College isn't that expensive. You gotta remember that when you share a house you live off campus and you gotta pay for water, power, internet, food, rates, bond, then the cost of getting to uni and you also miss out on the fun college lifestyle.

Most students actually only move out of college because they can't consentrate on study, not necessarily money.

Moneywise, scholarships are nice. With about 30 contact hours/week it's hard to fit a job in there, especially with large amounts of personal reading/study to keep up. I plan to get a job each holidays + do a bit of tutoring just to have some independent income and gain experience I suppose. I'm lucky that I didn't need to move out of home, and also that the uni's giving me something lol.

No that's not true. At least, not at all colleges. Some colleges (eg the Baxter is it? At UNSW) are louder than others (Shalom) but there are always people who move out because they can't afford to stay. At St Thomas More, which has the reputation for being the "drunkest" college of UWA, I would say about half of the people who move out do so because they want the extra pocket money (and came to college to find roommates) while a smaller number move out purely because they can't afford to stay - even the $10-$20 per week saved renting alone is worth the inconvenience. The rest leave because they don't like the atmosphere (too loud, not loud enough, not the right people, don't like the food, want more space etc) or they are kicked out for various reasons (consistent failure, breaches of college policy, nuisance).

I don't know at Adelaide colleges are about $280/week + ~$5/week internet which I think when you take into account bills, social functions, cleaning your room, convenience, cooking time, close to everything. If you put monetary cost to things this is CHEAPER than being by yourself. Love it, just a bit disruptive at times.

Is the food really that bad? Also, can you NOT pay for the food as part of your college fees?

The food is AWFUL. I'd rather cook for myself.
Depends on college. Some offer as part of package.
