Will the IR linkage never stop - I'm sorry but painting the IR reforms as scrooge/stealing christmas is a step to far in the direction of hyperbole.

That said I also wish you a merry christmasm and happy new year.

PS: I'd love to see you present a good reason for christmas and new years day NOT being retail trading days....

Ah, this happens to be the first time that I have referred to the reforms in such a way (and it wasn't that serious a link, but I guess that forums aren't that good at conveying the tone of one's message without the use of emoticons (which I try not to use)). As for the ps question, why shouldn't there be no retail trading days? Why must we all be at the mercy of the market 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 (or 366) days a year?

You may well be a free-marketer who is of the opinion that we should surrender to the market and that all are on an equal footing when it comes to workplace negotiations and that the option of a job or the street is a true choice, but that is not a view that I share.

Merry Christmas :).

I don't think we are on equal footings in terms of negotiatiing - especially in the case of the lowly skilled.

What I think you forget is that we are the market - we demand that shops be open on christmas day and then we have to work in them.

I was actually more interested in the contrast eg it is only retailer who get christmas day off (by law). Many people do have to work christmas eg last year I would've had to work christmas if we hadn't been able to shut down the farm (which was a close call) and I was back at work on boxing day.

I am not so sure as to the notion that we are the market - yes, it's an economic construct and isn't a living entity, but at the current time it is as though we live for the market rather than a case of the market operating for us.

Many people do have to work through Christmas (not most, though), but under the current system they are compensated to a certain extent (or their AWA passed the industry specific no-disadvantage test). However, with the exception of the necessities (frontline public services) and notions of commercial advantage and 'time is money' aside, how many of these industries actually have to operate? A stupid question, some may say.

Bah, all that I wanted to do was wish everyone a Merry Christmas and provide the odd joke or two. Sadly, both my attempt at offering a poltically correct alternative to Christmas (something that I thought some may find funny) and my tongue in cheek remark regarding Christmas and the IR reforms (something that I have been associated with for some time) were misread. Oh well, Merry Christmas, all.

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or the secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious or secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.

May you have a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2006, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped to make Australia the uniquely wonderful place that it is (not to imply that Australia is necessarily greater than any other country but nonetheless including and recognising the distinctiveness of the state of NSW) and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, political belief, choice of computer platform or sexual preference of the wishee.

By accepting this greeting you are accepting these terms. This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for herself or himself or others, is void where prohibited by law and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes
first, and the warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.

In other words.... A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR! ... :)
