I was wondering if there was a sort of meta-symbolism kind of technique. The quote in question is: "for the swiftness of the plane ascent is an exemplary symbol of transformation." The persona is aware they are making the symbolism of the plane ascent, and calls it a symbol, so would you say it would be metasymbolism/metafictive symbolism?

yeah, maybe 'metafictively elucidates the transformative symbol of the plane'

but really it's just them linking plane=metaphor of transformation, therefore doesn't have any true qualities of metafiction (which involves the author stating that their narrative is a text), but I'm sure English teachers lick that stuff up - use maybe if ur low on words don't bother otherwise for clarity of evidence.

Maybe use 'metonym' or 'explicit metaphor' as alternative techniques
