Before considering to just use mIRC, think of others, like X-Chat.
Though I myself would prefer mIRC over X-Chat everyday of the week, I still felt a little obliged to inform you of the alternatives. The most popular being X-Chat. I don't think I'll express my opinion on X-Chat though, I'll get banned.

mIRC does the job.

I really like mIRC as a stand alone IRC program. The Interface is clean and intuitive. I use it when when I want to chat or do stuff with DCC. Meanwhile, I just use Trillian for casual idling.

irc is for chit chat with crazy people. the warez and porn are just incidental to this
