my teacher said we can and should, the other teacher said we cant at all
idk anything about english at this point. i think collective personal pronouns like we us our are safe, not sure about i and me tho.

i think collective pronouns are fine but personal ones will sound 'too colloquial' - you could get marked down based on the marking criteria "uses language appropriate to audience, purpose and form"

No on the personal pronouns, that ruins the formality of your essay but 'our' and 'we [as the audience]' is perfectly fine. Use them sparingly though as too much of those as personal voice and the personal nature of a response is not entirely dependent on how much you can "make it about yourself" in the form of pronouns and still feels very informal

BTW, since we're on Mod B - would it be impressive and demonstrate extensive research / reading to reference a non-prescribed poem (talking about T.S. Eliot) when discussing a theme e.g sexuality, and referencing the hermaphrodite character Tiresias in Waste Land (non-prescribed)? Or would the teachers not care?

  • Instead of: "I believe this text reveals..."
  • Use: "This text reveals..."
  • Instead of: "This provokes our inner consciousness..."
  • Use: "This provokes an exploration of inner consciousness..."
Focusing on the text and its themes, techniques, and effects on the reader rather than on personal opinions will strengthen your analysis and align with the expectations of the examiners.

hmm i'm not entirely sure

i think you could mention it when discussing eliot's work holistically e.g. "[theme] is explored beyond [syllabus poem] in Eliot's other works of the time, such as in 'The Waste Land', reflecting the prevalence of..." but you can probably find the theme in other poems anyway which would fit the marking criteria better

although apparently the old syllabus required explicit reference to academic sources but the current one doesn't, so that might apply to this kind of thing? like you can do it but its not going to benefit really

probably not, i'd just stick to the prescribed poems as it would be better to show your understanding of the oeuvre they assign as a whole
