When compounds are seperated i.e. combustion the bonds holding the atoms comprising the compound are broken. This realeases energy.

Where does this energy comes from. I.e. if ionic bonding is broken, how does electrostatic forces convert into heat energy? Or have i gotten the concept wrong?

I do know that this apparently isnt in the syllabus, but i just would like to know.

When bonds are broken, the potential chemical energy holding the bonds together gets converted into kinetic/heat energy because the atoms must move away from each other to pull the bond apart, or else they would attract each other and eventually bond if they're too close.
