Motor Effect practical??? (1 Viewer)

Hey there.

"Perform a first hand investigation to demonstrate the motor effect"

Does this dot point require that we measure the exact force experienced by the object being tested (usually a current carrying element suspended off 2 retort stands).

Or does it simply require us to "qualitatively" observe the force or movement in the carrying element that is in compliance with the right hand palm rule?

What I'm saying is, did you guys have to measure the force is experienced or simply observe which way the wire moved.

I had my students use the F = BILSin(theta) formula

They measured the force exerted on a current carrying conductor, by placing a piece of wire on an electronic balance and measuring the difference in displayed 'mass' on the scale when a current was passed thru it when it was placed in a magnetic field, thus working out the force by multiplying it by 9.8. Also knowing the Current, the length of the conductor and the angle, they worked out the size of the magnetic field existing between the 2 magnets.

They then varied the 4 variables and determined the effect of changing them. They then reversed the polarity of the voltage and then changed the direction of the magnetic field.

The prac took nearly 2 hours, but most of them did it :)

I'm collecting that prac tomorrow, so i'll see how they did...

Anywaiz, to your question, it says "demonstrate the motor effect" to me, that would mean only making observations or getting results which would confirm the motor effect, I.e., Right Hand Palm Rule. Definately sounds qualitative.

Ah ok. Seems like you guys made it interesting. So yeah, we did it qualitatively, just wanted to make sure it was fine because one of my textbooks actually did one similar to yours.
