I'm currently doing preliminary English and failed my first assessment. It was an essay regarding our area of study and a related text. I've just finished my half yearlies and I'm pretty sure I've stuffed it up too. Teachers from my school suggest moving down to standard. Should I do so? The workload doesn't bother me, but its the fact that i put so much effort into English, yet yielding no results bug me a little.

With English, if you're putting tonnes of effort into all the wrong things and you don't complete the most critical aspects of your assessment like answering the question properly, you'll do poorly. Unfortunately, that's the way it is. The only way to fix this is to find out what you're doing wrong. Talk to your teachers and ask them where you are struggling and follow any advice they're giving you because they are the ones you need to impress (not yourself or your peers).

If you find Advanced still too difficult or you can't fix up what's going wrong, it's probably best to move to Standard.
