MRI/Medical phys (1 Viewer)

There are two parts of a dot point that i can't find info on:
Why can MRI be used to:
-detect cancerous tissue
-distinguish between white and grey matter in the brain.

I have had a look around a bit, but can't find anything that i can make a sufficient explaination out of.

Another dot point that i need help with is: "assess the impact of medical applications of physics on society"

This is so broad that i don't know where to start. Can anyone that did this last year point me in the right direction? Thanks.
