So far ive got a quote of $1928.75

for

Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
Prescott 800FSB motherboard
512 Mb's DDR RAM
ATI Radeon 9200
Panasonic floppy lol..
120Gb 7200 rpm
LG DVD Re-writer
56k internal modem
Optical Mouse
Multimedia Keyboad
17" LCD Monitor
XP home
MS OEM works suite
Midi ATX 8870Kl tower (might change to something better)

Im having second thoughts about the Pentium 4, because well.. the AMD's are faster, but im not sure which to buy.... nor with the Motherboard (maybe Nvidia) instead, and a G-Force graphics card or a higher powered Radeon??

Are you going to be playing any games? If so the 9200 wont make the cut. I suggest a 6600gt. You haven't specified the brand of the LCD monitor nor the pixel response time, so no comment as yet. That seems expensive for the gear, where are you purchasing it from?

hmmm, perhaps the reason why the price of that system is a little high is the inclusion of windows (xp home is like what, $150?) and the MS works suite. I'm getting a system with the same price range and recommend an AMD 64 3200 with a nice 6600gt. you dont have to do PCI-e if you dont want to, since there are some 6600gt's for AGP, but they are a little pricier. great card though

It Warehouse...

Its an LG LCD, not sure about the refresh rate.

Yeh, i will be playing some games, but not all the time, ive been stuck with this Pentium III 667 for 5 years, ill be glad to be playing Battlefield 1942 and CoD on my new pc.
Let's just say with exorbitant Uni fee's, campus money etc etc, i wont be the "ultimate-gamer"..

Komaticom : Why ditch the internal??? and ill worry about speakers later

Monaro-man: i was thinking bout switching to an AMD 3400+ , and sorry to say this - but i have no real idea what a PCI-e is? nor an "AGP" , please enlighten me...

If you don't use floppy drives much then get rid of that, 'cause chances all computers you use will have USB ports - invest some money into a USB flash drive. For a uni comp it helps to have usb ports at the FRONT of the case too btw...

Is there a brand on the RAM/hdd? Since I've heard some brands perform better than others and are less prone to suddenly dying the night your assignment is due.

Internal modems are pretty crappy, it's better to get an external one - you can pick them up dirt cheap these days.

If you already have a kb/mouse with your current computer that you like, then I wouldn't bother getting *more*.

The guys have already mentioned the LCD screen and things you might like to consider regarding that..

Finally I would highly recommend the OpenOffice suite if you are trying to save money. Getting MS Works just adds a bit more $ which you could be spending on uni textbooks. ;)

why get modem at all :p saves you $20

if you've got digital cameras or use diff type of media, instead of getting a floppy, get one of those card readers.
they normally do 12 in 1 plus 1 USB and 1 FireWire port.
