the short thing to say is that it is an osmoregulator and that it filters nitrogenous waste from the body. it reabsorbs water and regulates the salt concentration of the blood. that is it in a nut shell without being too long for you.

There are four parts to the kidney
The medulla (the stuff on the inside)
The cortex (lining on the outside)
and the ureter (a large tube descending from the kidney)
some diagrams may also draw the renal artery in which delivers blood to the kidney.
The parts of the nephron are :
The Glomerulus
Bowman's Capsule
The Proximal Tubule
The Loop of Henle
The Distal Tubule
The Collecting Duct
in that order.
Filtration - Filtration is the process by where materials within the blood are forced through the glomerulus into the Bowman's capsule. This process is non selective and all organic nutrients, water, urea and salts are forced through except proteins and red blood cells, which are too large. It is due to this non selectivity that materials need to be reabsorbed.
Water is absorbed passively throughout the kidney except at the ascending loop of Henle.
Salt ions are actively reabsorbed throughout the kidney.

Just on that note about the ascending loop of henle thing, you said that water is reabsorbed everywhere throughout the nephron except in the ascending loop of henle, why is that?
And why is it that salts are actively reabsorbed in the nephron? Does that mean they saty in the cells of the kidney or?
Im a bitconfused about the secretion thing as well...
