Is it true our UAI's are comprimised (after being fiddled around with, scaled, whatever) of our RAW HSC MARKS (from the actual exam).

And have absolutly nothing to do with our assesment rank?

ie Assesment rank is only use to find your 'hsc mark' - the average of moderated assesment mark and scaled hsc (exam) mark.?

Basicly what Im asking is,
If I have absolute crap ranks (assesment ranks - for intra school assesments), yet totally blitz the HSC tests, my UAI will be great?

-that is, not 'dragged down' at all by our bad assesment stuff?

Hope you understand what im trying to ask
thanks for ready and thanks in advance for reply!

your uai is calculated from your HSC mark [the mark you get in the exam] and your assessment mark.

how do you get your assessment mark?
well, your assessments ranks are used to determine these. when your class does the hsc, the ass. marks are distributed to correlate the hsc ranks [ and marks] with the assessment ranks.

eg:
Code:
student school rank hsc mark hsc rank assement mark uai calculation mark
rob 1 75 2 95 85
john 2 65 3 75 70
rahul 3 95 1 65 80
you can see that the assessment rank [moreso the difference between the marks from in-school are used to determine your assessment marks, but i will use ranks to make it simple]
so rob, who was ranked 1st will get the top mark from his class in the hsc as his assessment mark. similarly, john will get the second highest and rahul will get the third highest marks as their assessment marks.

Our assessment compromise 50% of our HSC.

And our assessment rank and relative differences between students are taken into account to work out a moderated assessment mark.

This moderated assessment mark and exam mark are average to get your RAW HSC mark.

This RAW HSC mark is scaled by the UAC.

So yes, your assessment does have a lot to do with your UAI.

However, If you have 'crap' rankings but that corresponding mark to that rank is actually a pretty good mark then it means that just because your ranking is poor doesn't mean your UAI is going to be low.

There is no such thing as being dragged up or dragged down.

My interpretation of this is because you got say a low assessment mark (about 60) and you blitzed the HSC exam (around 90), your HSC mark will become the average of the 2, which is 75.

So -technically- you could say it drags you down because it results in a lower averaged mark.

But your marks aren't going to be magically reduced on purpose because you got poor rankings.

So yes, you need to perform consistently in order to do well and avoid having a lower HSC mark due to a poor internal assessment as it compromises 50% of your HSC.

Hope that makes sense and answered your question.

And this value (75) is then fiddled around with some more by UAC, to give us our UAI, yes?

Thank you very much for clearing that up, I must have (mistakingly) thought that when it was said that

"This RAW HSC mark is scaled by the UAC."

That the 'raw hsc mark' is 100% our raw HSC exam mark, and not the 'other(?)' hsc mark (the 50/50 one).

Thanks alot for clearing that up, much appreciated

your HSC exam mark isnt your 'raw hsc mark'. it is aligned, what people say 'scale' often...
we are never given the raw marks.

That is correct. That 75 is then scaled. And the aggregate of the scaled marks of the best 8 units + 2 units of english will result in a mark that is used to rank the students thus resulting in the UAI.

Neither are we given the scaled UAC marks.
And the aligned marks we received from the Board of Studies don't usually mean that much as we are only concerned with what the UAC does - unless you don't plan on going into University.

yes, not assesment ranks are used in the uai

they are only used in finsing the hsc results, which are in turn used in the uai
