I’m considering 3 majors, and I should be able to do 2 of them. They are ‘politics and international studies’, ‘philosophy’, and ‘history’. I do not know what job I want to do, and I know that this degree is probably useless for getting a job. I know I should looking into this more, but at least for the start of next year I can’t really see myself doing anything other than continuing my arts degree. I have heard that politics has more career potential out of the three, and that philosophy would be better than history because it shows you know how to ‘think’. Could this be true? I have no idea I just heard it around. I am probably most fascinated by philosophy out of these three, but unlike the other two I can see how philosophy could lead to learning no actual real world knowledge at all, even from a non-career related perspective. Anyone have any experience with this? I am thinking of doing philosophy and politics, because I just find philosophy so interesting, and I’m pretty sure I don’t want to be a historian, so I don’t think I will be cutting away any options by not doing history.

I know this is from a little while ago, but I thought I might help you with my own experience, although I haven't got a 'real' job yet.

Politics is one of my two majors, and I have a minor in history and an almost minor in philosophy.
It really depends on what you like. In my opinion, and the opinions of many of the staff members with whom I have close relationships, unless you want to be directly in one of the three fields, it doesn't matter to an employer which you have. As an Arts graduate, there's a good chance you'd be applying for a government job- and unless you're applying for DFAT, all your degree will show is high level analytical and research skills, which you will get from any of the three above as a major.
Even taking the above into account, there is no reason why, even if you did, say, philosophy as your undergraduate major, you couldn't do studies in one of the others at a later date. The lines of the three disciplines are really quite blurry- I'm going to be doing my Honours in Politics, but I know I'll be using history, philosophy, and sociology within my thesis, and the skills associated with them.

So I guess my advice is- do whichever of the three you want to do. You can always do subjects in the rest of the faculty. If you're still feeling indecisive, perhaps I'd consider picking the one you like best/do well in as your major, and leave your second major blank (can always declare it later), do subjects in all three areas, you might end up with a second major, or a minor. :)

I hope this helps.
