Do they exist? Such that anytime you can just start chatting to the other computer u are networked to?

Are they any good? or is just connecting to msn better ... ?

There are alot of freeware tools like this on the net for download.

Sometimes they have the same functionality as other Internet IM programs like MSN, but the main point is that if you're, say in an office building with no Internet connection, then you can't use Internet IMs. Or if you regularly transfer files it might be expensive to transfer the files over the Internet when you can do it over your network.

I think you can use a command called NETSEND in CMDPrompt, but dont remember the line.
Sunny prolly does.

I remember some kid at school used NETSEND to "all" the computers in the school with a nice li'l message that got him busted! ;)

net send is based on the messenger service, and as jm already said, won't work in SP2.

If you don't have SP2 and have the messenger service running, its:

net send targetmachine message
eg, net send localhost this is a message

Has that something to do with Windows trying to phase out CMDPrompt ?

i think it ws because of a flaw in the messenger system of the original XP, whereby spammers could exploit a loophole in the messenger system of a computer to send advertisements
