hey i'm trying to network 2 comps together by a direct connection with each other. they're both on winxp. the problem is that it says the network cable is unplugged when it actually is already plugged in.

this never happened when the main comp use to be on win98se. now that i've got a new comp which uses xp, i occasionally get this error. sometimes i can fix it by replugging it, but today i've done it a million times and it still says its unplugged. whats wrong?

If you're networking P2P, you need to use a Cross Over Cable.

If you do already have a cross over cable well... try making sure you have the latest drivers. it always helps.

have it unpluged turn both computers on and then plug in. if your using a computer as a dchp server then you've made this annoyly hard. buy a hub/switch.

yeah, don't use dhcp if it's just 2 comps
static is the way to go

While it's not ideal, I get this problem from time to time and find that speed limiting each of the cards in device manager to 10mbps rather than 100mbs helps too. No clue if this is the solution to your problem, but if all else fails it might be worth a look ;)

make sure ur 'main' computer deals with the speed management, and the rest put to auto-detect.

I love 1Gb ethernet :D
