I just got my letter from the BOS and UAC today about my results.

I did 11units this year, which means 1unit obviously didn't count.
I thought my maths extention1 wouldnt count because i didnt do well at all.
However it says that my maths extention1 did count after all... instead, 1unit of my Japanese for background speakers didnt count.

Heres what I got;

Maths extention 1 - 26/50
Japanese for background speakers - 84

I know that maths extention1 has got a really good scaling... but better than my japanese? I checked the PDF about the scaled means for this year... it said

Maths extention - 39.3
Japanese for background speakers - 20.3

now i understand japanese is terribly scaled down... but what i dont get is, i also do Hospitality which the scaled mean was

Hospitality Operations - 20.2

I got 80 for my HSC mark... so why didnt my Japanese count instead?? I got a worse mark in Hospitality, and Hospitality is even scaled lower than Japanese... does it have something to do with how many ppl in the course??

im quite disappointed because i thought i did pretty well in my Japanese, but only 1unit counted towards my UAI...

im kinda getting confused even writing this... and im sorry if this is a stupid question to ask X(

Your scaled mark depends on both the scaled mean for a course and your position in the course. One can compensate for the other - so you can overcome a low scaled mean by beating lots of other students who are taking the course. (Otherwise, scaling wouldn't be fair.)

I've estimated your scaled marks and state percentiles:

Course Scaled Mean Position Scaled Mark (/50)
Japanese (Bck. Spkrs.) 20.3 Top 29% 25.2
Maths Extension 1 39.3 Top 80% 26.1
Hospitality 20.2 Top 8% 34.2

As you can see, your performance in Hospitality was far above your performance in the other two courses - your score placed you in the top 8% of the state.

For the other two courses... the scaled mean for Maths Extension 1 was significantly higher than that of Japanese Background Speakers. Even though you were ranked quite highly in the latter (top 29%) compared to the former (bottom 20%), it seems the scaled mean was just enough to outweigh the benefit of your position in Japanese and tip Maths Extension 1 in your favour. Your two scaled marks are quite close.

The scaling totally destroyed my friend's UAI.

All his subjects were Band 5's except for a Band 6.

Another friend got 2 Band 5's, and the rest, Band 4's and 3's.

But they still both got 88 with a few 0. marks difference.

What's up with that? He's kinda pissed. I mean, he got 80-something in all his subjects plus a 90. The other person got things in the 60,s 70s and 80s.

Just because he doesn't do any Science or Maths subjects... The scaling went too far in my opinion. I feel sorry for him.

I was really upset with the scaling and my uai too, so I know how your friend feels. Music was scaled pretty low, and it killed my UAI.

Thanks so much Lazarus, for explaining about the scaling... :)

Already been about 2weeks since the results, my minds still strange...
when ppl keep asking me what i got, its kinda depressing!!!
i always say "I did alright", but their faces definitely dont look happy to me...

i am in the class of 2005. laz i'm awaiting the time when you put up the scaling of subjects for hsc of '04. :p

i have 2 subjects that don't scale too well, which are legal and ancient.

but in my opinion, the scaling system is fair, since the subjects are scaled in order of its difficulty. therefore imagine if someone did extension 2 maths and another did say....arabic beginners. it would be unfair that a person should have the same scaled mark when each got the same raw mark. because one subject is considerably harder than the other, and requires i think more effort or commitment or both.

Extension 2 maths scales better than Arabic Beginners because the students doing it are generally better all round, not because extension 2 is harder.

Ive found with my results the scaling iused this year was coniderably lower than last year :( But Im not sure if it was general scaling or just particular subjects.

i guess its all a fair concept...

though i still think its pretty unfair just cos uve got japanese parents
you have to do japanese for background speakers where everyone else
basically came here only few years ago... i came to australia when i was 8,
so i basically only received japanese education until yr2. ive never been to
japanese high school or anything, both my japanese and english actually suck!!
i think you gotta work pretty damn hard to do well in japanese background,
its basically learning japanese in japan. which is like english here.
im sure ppl doing beginners/continuers/extention would have to work pretty hard
as well, but the scaling!!! why such a huge difference between these subjects
and bs?? my friends who are half-japanese (they speak japanese at home) or
even full japanese but they were born here didnt have to do background
speakers. i think thats kinda unfair how these ppl are scaled so much higher
than bs.
so i guess the lesson should be not to do such course in the first place???
