Yep another question relating to the whole assessment mark/ HSC mark = UAI thing

I went to a study day recently the BOS liason officer for the hunter gave a lecture about UAI and in it she basically said:

School assessment marks dont matter at all, what matters are rankings and the difference in % between the rankings so basically someone 1st in internal assessments at 50% average (if doing the same in the HSC exam) would get the same UAI as someone coming 1st in internal assessments at 98% average

Also:

Student: Internal Assessment HSC Exam Mark
Student A: 98 80
Student B: 80 95
Student C: 77 50
Student D: 45 100

In this example seeing as student A is ranked first for his internal assessment mark he is given the highest HSC exam mark being 100 and student D ranking lowest internally is given the 50 as his assessment mark. The HSC exam mark is still kept the same so student A gets 100 and 80 (making 90 as his final mark for that subject) whereas student D gets 50 and 100 (making 75) The marks of students B and C depend on the % difference in their marks and are somehow worked out in between the top and bottom

I am almost positive this is what she said, does anyone else know this to be incorrect or altered in any way

Also what significance does the school ranking play which seems to be important to most students here?

And my big question would be do internal assessment marks matter at all? except for the fact that they have to be highest to rank 1st

Correct.

Well think about it. You are ranked 20th in your subjects at James Ruse, or a school coming 500th. Although, having said that, the whole idea of moderation means that if the same student goes to a different school (higher ranked or lower) they will get the same UAI. The main advantages of going to a highly ranked school is that the increased competition and competitivenss will motivate studnets to do study more and thus do better.

The marks realtively play no role, bar showing a students knowledge or ability in the course or where he/she can meet the course requirements, and of course ranking the students.

So if you coem first in your assessment mark, no matter what your actual assessment mark is, and then get 100 in the hsc exam, then you will get 100 for that course?
