The cable (ethernet cable) works.

anyone got any ideas?

the cable from modem to computer is supposed to be RJ45 CAT5 straight cable

not crossover

another thing, modem needs to reset if you are changing config around...say you want to swap from one network card to another, you need to powerdown modem and wait say a minute and then start again so that optus picks the new mac address and provide you with a new IP...
i guess you will need to do the same for USB

i don't quite understand your network layout....maybe more description would help

jsut to make sure it works :D

i like my things to work.

Yes, it is a straight-through cable.

And by the way, it should not matter how my network is laid out.
Treat this situation as a just 1 PC.

A small rabbit hole....
Like thingo said, you need to completely reset the modem so it clears the cache of its ip configs. Just pull out the power plug and leave it out for about 5 seconds (no need to wait for a full minute) and then plug it back in AFTER you have switched from USB to cat5 =)
