Everything I read gives me a different deffinition of osmosis. I don't know whether its movement of particles from high conc to low conc, or movement across a semi-permeable membrane, or movement of water, or any combination of these, or something else! Does anyone know what deffinition the board of studies likes?

Well from learning in year 11 :p, I learnt it as

Osmosis - the movement of water from an area of high concentration of water to an area of low concentration of water. This results in the movement of water from a hypotonic solution to a hypertonic solution

It's a combination of your definitions. Osmosis is a special type of difussion, and like kadlil said, the movement of water from high conc. to low conc. acorss a selectively permeable membrane.

pfft i dunno, i just say osmosis is the movement of water from an area of high concentration to low concentration through a semi-permeable membrane. :) Good enough!
