Here's one to think about. Does the individual own labour or the society that created the individual? And yes this question does feed into the socialism vs free market debate.

Labour isn't owned by anyone other than the individual. Most people are not required to work were others tell them to, it is up to the individual to choose how they supply labour, in what manor they supply labour and in what quantities they supply labour(to some extent).

i was always of the opinion that labour is a resource owned by the individual who may voluntarily choose to sell it as a marketable commodity to society in exchange for wages. to not be free to do so would infringe upon personal freedoms, however working has become a necessity rather than a mandatory requirement in order to to survive comfortably;
the government could argue that by providing the resources of education (which doesn't come cheap over a minimum of 10 years) and the tools to adapt to society that they expect you to work for the country to repay to society the tax dollars that our predecessors provided through their taxes - also a reason why the country doesn't want skilled workers to expatriate
