Normally cholrine is removed from the reaction with Methane according to the following:

Cl<sub>(g)</sub> + CH<sub>4 (g)</sub> ----> HCl<sub>g</sub> +CH<sub>3</sub>

Or through the reaction of ClO with NO2 (similar reaction).

However Antartica is well seperated from land (unlike the Artic) this plus polar winds seperate it preventing the circulation of air during winter (due to no convection currents heating the air forcing it to circulate).

On solid ice particles the HCl split up (which they normally do not but do due to the ice acting as a catalyst). So when spring sunlight helps circulate the air again you have an excess of Cl atoms which contribute to the degredation of ozone, these are often used up by mid spring so the hole repairs itself.
