A) Marko spent $135 this year at the Easter show, a 12.5% increase on last year. How much did he spend last year?

B) Steve's council rates increased by 5% this year to $840. What were his council rates last year?

C) i) Use you calculator to express 1/3 as a decimal by entering 1/3.
ii) subtract 0.333 333 33 from this, multiply the result by 10^8 and then take the reciprocal.
iii) show arithmetically that the final answer in part ii) is 3.

A) Let x be the original amount
1.125x = 135
x = $120
So he spent $120 last year

B) Again let x be original amount
1.05x = 840
x = $800
Council rates were $800 last year

C) i) 0.3333333 recurring
ii) and iii) After multiplying by 10^8 you get 0.333 333 3 so if I type 1/answer into the calculator you get 3.0000003 which I guess counts as 3.
