explain why a resistor is connected in series with a motor when it is turned on, and then later removed when motor is running

Because as the motor speeds up the back emf in the motor increases limiting the current through the motor.
At the beginning the back emf is minimal and the current flowing through is too high. The resistor limits the current here

thats right cos if the current gets too high
the motor will burn out, and it'll break
