yeah i think i will do teen movies. But i'm not 100% sure I'm prepared, I have notes and examples on the concepts, would that be sufficient?
and also, i wouldn't exactly be sure how to answer a question regarding socialisation.
Socialisation = behaviours and values
Its western socialisation in teen movies = conlifct with the eastern contexts basically
Talk about how such films socialises behaviours around:
- gender roles - in bend it like beckham, girls should not play footy, must clean cook, and teens adopt this etc
- virginity - must not be a virgin, you'll be an outcast "rites of passage" - eg. american pie - "they have a special dorm for people like us" - virgins
- expectations/standards - girls = feminine eg. 10 things I hate about u - kat is the opposite of her sis, therefore she is undesirable coz she is "ugly", socialises the idea that females must be pretty
- the idea that it teens are expected to be "rebellious" reinforce ideals of rebellion - confessions of a teenage "this is what people like us do" - pressures to wag school, to not be a "loser" must engage in rebellious behaviour
- encourages behaviour around alcohol - normalises teenage sex eg. juno
- education - positive shit as well - eg. clueless cher tries to maintain grades etc
- empowers youth idenitty as it encouages individuality eg. 10 things i hate "you dont always have to be what they want you to be" - kat to her sis, kat also reinforces ideas of feminism
- encourages teens to bond - pushes aside there differences - encourages them to basically eridcate the idea of stereotyping in breakfast club particularly.
Talk about rock n roll here as well where you can! - In 10 things the song "i dont care about my reputation" encourages teens to basically not care about shit, reponsbilities
Basically, when teens see this shit, they adopt it in order to fit in. Because of the mythology in teen movies, it creates this symbolic interctionism, and the characters in teen movies represent the ideal "teen", and teens basically copy it in order to fit in as they find fitting in a common conflict/problem in there micro world.
