whats the difference in difficulty between the two chem courses? i did no work watsoeva in the prelim course and im just wondering would it take much to catch up to everyone else? i seriously learnt nothing all yr and surprisingly not coming last http://www.boredofstudies.org/community/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=17#

* Learn the stuff that carries over e.g. moles and balancing equations
dont worry with all the info and stuff on metals.

you may be able to catch up, but u could seriously consider dropping it ...

hmmm
i didnt study one bit in prelim for anything cept for maths alittle maybe. But i did find prelim chem/physics much harder than hsc phys/chem.
However, prelim chem can help you so much in hsc chem

I found yr 11 harder than yr 12, particularly with the redox reactions and all. But in year 12, you really don't need to know what u learnt in yr 11, just what blueblue mentioned. You'll never see the empirical formula stuff again. You'll revisit redox reactions again in Identification and Production of Materials but it will be much easier to understand if you didn't understand it earlier.

PHEW!! THAT is such a relief, 'cause I haven't been listening much in class either, and I'm not doing particularly well...well...hmmmm its good to hear the two don't relate much...:D

However...I'm really loose on the hydrocarbon stuff, like naming them and drawing them and stuff like that, same with the calculations to do with concentration...what about precipitation reactions, stuff to do with dissolution to see if it is soluble...do i need to know any of that stuff?

can you give me a brief description of what i need to know so i can study over this holiday?

thanks a lot everyone

I've posted many times on this subject. Use the search button if you'd like my opinion:)

You don't really need to know the solubility table that much in yr 12. You'll come across precipitation reactions in the 3rd topic, Chemical Monitoring and Management, and tests to identify ions present in a solutions. eg. if you add HNO3 to a water solution and gas forms, then carbonate is present, the gas being CO2. These are ways to monitor the safety of water.

I'm not sure whether you have been given text books yet for yr 12, but if you do get Conquering Chemistry HSC Course, it may help you with how to draw and name hydrocarbons.
eg.
..... H...F... H...H
..... l.... l.... l......l
Br - C - C - C - C - H (Just ignore the dots)
..... l.... l.... l......l
..... H... H... H... H

To name this, you count the the least number of "carbon" atoms to get to the Bromine atom. So that would be 1. Then how many to the Fluorine atom- 2. It's from left to right in this case because it must be written in alphabetical order- B comes before F, etc... Now, there are 4 carbon atoms, so it's butane.

So, the name of this is 1- bromo, 2- fluoro butane... It's hard to explain it here, so you're better off looking in a book or something.

All I can say is that yr 12 is less complicated and more interesting.

If you overlook what you learnt each lesson for 10-15 minutes, it's not that difficult to understand.
