All the bigger tertiary institutions in NSW are public: USyd, UNSW, UTS, MQ, UOW, TAFE, etc, are all public.

Private tertiary institutions are usually called 'private colleges' in Australia and consist of things like Billy Blue, SIBT, religious colleges, professional colleges (law, medicine, dentistry, religious, entertainment, etc) retail/hospitality schools, etc. The only big exception which I can think of (a private uni) is Notre Dame in the city.

In Australia and Europe, you couldn't really say that we have 'private universities'. This contrasts with the US, where the private/public university system is like our highschool system here - private unis are more sought-after and expensive. All the Ivy League unis (Harvard, Yale, etc) in the US are private, whereas a few nice biggies (Uni of California) are public.
