What is the probability that in a random arrangement of the letters of the word MEALS

a) the consonants will come together?
B) the vowels will come at the ends?

i know it seems short and easy but that thing fucken pissed me off.

First, total arrangements = 5! = 120

a) Stick the consonants together: 3! ways of arranging [MLS] E A and 3! ways of arranging the M L S in each of those

3! * 3! = 36 arrangements where the consonants appear together

36/120 = 3/10 is the probability if an arrangement is selected at random.

b) Stick the vowels at the ends: either E[MLS]A or A[MLS]E, and 3! ways of arranging the M L S for both of those

2 * 3! = 12 arrangements where the vowels appear at the ends

12/120 = 1/10 is the probability if an arrangement is selected at random.
