One of the syllabus dot points states:

perform a first-hand investigation, gather information and analyse data to calculate initial and final velocity, maximum height reached, range and time of flight of a projectile for a range of situations by using simulations, data loggers and computer analysis

We never performed this prac in class, so I was wondering what other people did and the results they obtained.

This is a VERY important practical.
In Physics and Chemistry, at least ONE practical must be done with a datalogger, and this Physics practical happens to be one of them !
The datalogger is needed to measure the initial velocity.

We found a high place, a balcony to perform the practical (ideally just between 1-2 storeys high), we used a softball as a projectile.

Basically, we pushed a ball off a table from a certain height (measured) which will be our vertical displacement.

The ball is resting on a table which a datalogger can measure its initial velocity as it is pushed off the table.
Other measurements are done manually.

Students with stopwatches measure the time of flight as soon as it fell off and stop measuring as soon as it hits the floor, note it is ideal that there are MORE students to increase accuracy because each person's reaction time is different.

Using time of flight we can measure the range.

That as a fun physics lesson that day ha!

We kicked a ball round on the oval and a set distance apart and filmed it, then, using Excel, plotted the points and recorded where the ball was after every frame of the recorder (24 times a second). Counted the dots and worked out the time the ball was in the air, etc. Compared it to theoretical results and found the result of air resistance.
