From (my bad) memory, proto-oncogenes are genes that code for growth factors for a cell. If they mutate, they become carcinogenic oncogenes and may produce excessive growth factors, resulting into unrestrained cell growth/multiplication and ultimately into a tumour.
ive heard of it but we never went into as much detail as halo... this is what i have learnt... very simple and straight to the point...
proto oncogenes produce proteins that STIMULATE cell growth and cell division
tumour suppressor genes on the other hanf produce proteins that SLOW down or stop cell growth and divison..
to be healthy... you need a balance of the two
we used an example of the gene product p53 instead...if its what im thinking of, the dot point relating to how a change in a gene can affect an organisms functioning or something like that
