just for argument's sake..

let's say you rank last in school, but you are an outlier - there is a huge gap between your mark and the next higher mark. But in the hsc, your mark is the highest out of your school. Will the algorithm ignore your school mark or something? Basically, how will you fair in this situation?

In the scenario you described, everyone is included as per normal. The student ranked first receives your exam mark as their moderated assessment mark, and their own exam mark as their exam mark. You, being ranked last, receive the bottom exam mark (or something close to it) as your moderated assessment mark, and your own exam mark (the top one) as your exam mark.

Outliers will only be excluded where their exam performance is markedly below what was expected on the basis of their assessments. e.g., if you had a group who were clumped together, and then one of them performed particularly badly in the exam, that low mark might be excluded. But if you have someone who is already performing badly, a low exam mark is only going to be consistent with this poor performance.
