In the HSC you'll be writing your centre number on everything you hand up. If a marker compares your paper to other papers with the same centre number - your classmates - and finds you're the odd one out, they'll know you studied an AOS independently, without teacher assistance.

I don't know what their policy is on penalisation, but my teacher says they frown upon studying something independently.

That's the funniest thing I've heard in a while!

English Outcomes
Students:

  • Shall not learn independently; nor shall they display any independent thought whatsoever.
HSC EXAMINATION RULES

During the HSC English exam :

  • You must not present work that has been independently conceived; and
  • Any student who attempts any form of independent thought may be severely penalized insofar as cancellation of papers, zero marks, or refusal of Higher School Certificate.

Um...you completely misinterpreted what I meant. I meant they frowned upon studying, say, an AOS that your class wasn't doing collectively. If you'd bothered to understand the context of my post instead of posting something as stupid as that I'm sure you would've realised.

The only reason it's frowned upon is because students who deviate from what they've studied in class generally do very poorly!

You're allowed to do it, but unless you've studied that topic all year, you're unlikely to do as well.

This is a related question to the one this post is about. I heard somewhere (maybe from my teacher) that in english the students must do atleast one module in which a Shakespeare text is studied. Is this true? Does everyone in the state study Shakespeare in one of the modules?

For Advanced, yes.
You must study: poetry, prose, nonfiction/media, film and Shakespeare.

Standard students aren't required to study Shakespeare.

Plus internal assessments would most likely pertain to the module your classmates are studying...so you'd probably be doing a disservice to yourself in both the HSC exam and in internal assessments...

Even though I hate some of the options my school has chosen.

I know that if I studied something independently, it'd never be as good as the chosen module studied with the class.

So if you want the best advantage for the HSC, just work hard in class.

Ha! Ha!

Love your work.

Yes, I understood your post. I still thought the quoted sentence was funny (it was expressed strangely); and, accordingly, felt the need to sustain and nourish it.

I think he means that he finds it funny that it's a paradox how teachers expect you to study independently to make it through exams and classwork on your own, but do not want you to study independently in regards to the resources and electives provided by them.

lol...my English Ext 1 class was doing Crime Fiction - I didn't like it so I dropped it...problem solved. Had we done Postmodernism (or something other than CF) then maybe I'd still be doing it :p
