Would the best way for solving a question like be substituting random arbitrary points?

I would solve this by inspection.

what does y equal when x=0

You will eliminate A

Now look at what happens when you approach 0 from the left hand-side and right hand-side

Take C) as an example

as x -> 0^- then y->0^-

Therefore C) is eliminated


Now you need to decide for B)

Examine what happens as x->0^- and x->0^+

You will y is approaching 0 from above in both cases. Therefore B is eliminated.

You will see that D) is the only one that satisfies the criteria


Another alternative solution

could look at lim x-> infinity and whether function is odd or even
