I think it would depend on how that 80 compares to everyone else doing the course.

an 80 is good, but will depend on ur subject and the amount of people getting that mark
eg. if u do jap ext....a mark of 80 is seriously CRAP!...because most ppls get a band 6 in that subject!
80 for standard eng or general maths is pretty good......

I think thats your purpose actually. If you yourself could see some of the meaningless unhelpful crap you churn out in the subject specific forums.

Just got to SAM and check what percentile of the state you're in. Lower = better (closer to the top).

Then you've got to check the scaling from that subject.

It actually mentions the scaled marks too.

Just a few things from the UAC site maybe interesting to see trends, from 2002's HSC:

Course > HSC mean > %Band 6 > 5 > 4 > 3 > 2
Chemistry > 34.8 > 8 > 21 > 25 > 23 > 15

Note:
(i) Marks are reported on a one-unit basis, so the range is 0 to 50.
(ii) P99, P90, P75, P50, P25 refer to the 99th, 90th, 75th, 50th and 25th percentiles respectively.
Course > Mean > S.D. > Maximum > P99 > P90 > P75 > P50 > P25
HSC mark 34.8 > 7.7 > 48.7 > 46.9 > 44.2 > 40.6 > 35.5 > 30.0
scaled mark 31.8 > 9.5 > 50.0 > 46.8 > 42.8 > 39.1 > 33.4 > 25.8
