When first getting in the car and starting, (manual) do you start the car in neutral or first gear? (During the provisional driving test)

I read in the book something about being in neutral, but I've always been taught to start in first. (control over the car, etc)

first is silly as you have to have foot on brake and clutch

lol wat do u mean control over the car?? the handbrake is already on its not going anywhere. start in neutral with clutch in. when ur parking u shift it into first when u turn the car off so it acts like the parking pawl in an auto incase the handbrake fails
