  • responded to the set question with sophistication and originality
  • demonstrated an ability to understand the connection between characters and their function in the vision of the playwrights
  • understood and could articulate their vision for experiences of, or knowledge about, ways in which the texts could be staged/realised in performance
  • were fluent, sustained and comprehensive discussions, supported by appropriate and carefully selected examples and quotations.

That's from last years 2003 marking guidelines for Contemporary Australian. As you can see reference to the text is apart of stronger responses, but isn't the whole deal. "Lots of quotes" wont get you a band 6, just like using 9999 workshopping experiences won't get you a band 6.

For absurdism

  • were able to deal with aspects of the question comprehensively
  • understood clearly the context of the development of theatre of the absurd and the influence of existentialism
  • were able to identify the thematic concerns through the action of the plays
  • divided the discussion equally over all three plays
  • were able to refer to techniques and the theatricality in all three plays
  • showed an understanding of the stage directions and settings of the plays
  • provided specific examples of human interaction
  • addressed human condition and interaction through characterisation

From the syllabus

http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_hsc/pdf_doc/drama_specexam.pdf

A band 6 (17-20) in the essays means you:

  • Interprets, and explains comprehensively, how the content and style of
Australian drama and theatre reflect particular aspects of Australian
    society in the chosen texts

  • Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the
significance of specific dramatic and theatrical techniques and concepts,
and the contexts that have influenced specific styles and movements

  • Provides an informed and analytical evaluation in a complex and logical
    manner

  • Provides a well-substantiated response with convincing examples,
quotations, evidence from the chosen texts and practical experiences
    related to the chosen texts

So, use quotes by all means, they are A PART of what you need to get in the top band, but definately not everything. Like honestly, how can a few quotes get you top marks :p

Neo's right...

plus RE: ABSURDIST DRAMA -- there are seven main points =
Absence of plot
Repetition
Non-sequitor
Silences
Sense of the Sinister
Cyclic Dialogue
Pantomime

A good way to remember these tools is to makeup a song that uses the first letter of each of these conventions. A popular one at my skool is:
Always Remember No Sex Sometimes Causes Pain. :)

ahhh. love skanky mnemonics. in trig (when i still was dumb enough to do maths) we had one to remember which functions or whatever they're called are negative in which sector...anyway it was All/Sine/Tan/Cosine, but at our school it was All Sluts To Chev (a catholic school down the road) which in year 10 we found hilarious.
