i got a stereo -> stereo cable from dick smith (apporx $13). it goes from the headphone jack on my home stereo to the line in on my soundcard. i use it to record radio shows i would otherwise listen to but miss. its nowhere near as nice as that though, but it works on any machine with a soundcard :p

omg that's exactly what i did when i was bored
i record the top 5 music count down then listen to it some other time when im even more bored
The file got quite large so i compressed it into mp3

This sort of thing can also be done for tv as well.. as long as you have a tv "capture card"

An alternative to pirated internet stuff

hehe yeah its choice, i used to record on an sgi indy which came with a little program where you could set start and finish times to stop recording. there was a show i really liked that went from 10:30pm to 12. i would record it which created about a 1gig .aiff file, convert it to mp3, then listen to it the next day. i should get it set up again.
