ok I don't do chemistry...but tomorrow I have to goto this primary school to do a bloody little experiments with the kiddies...its to get kids to come to our school...anyway they put me in the science group...so what I am going to do is a water and oil experiment.....You know how they don't seperate and stuff

can someone give me a little explanation but this whole density thing so that i can explain it to the kids...and how this experiment works....

tell them oil has a more complex molecular structure which stops it from dissolving, and that oil is denser (just tell them that it weigh's more) than water in ANY equal amounts

Zahid, I thought the point was they DO seperate!

I wouldn't say molecular to eleven/twelve year olds!

Say it in terms of affinity:

Water likes ammonia.
Water dislikes oil.

Adding a pretty indicator to the oil before mixing should preduce a pretty effect.

If you can get your hands on a seperating funnel, you'll really look like pros! Plus you can do it again and again and again that way. It is also a lot easy to vigorously mix in a seperating funnel.

Good luck!

explain in simple words if u explain about the molecule structrue you will be asked about that just say thatoil is ligter than oil so it floats on waer, like rubbish flats on water

fine! i'd just talk about the quantem levels of molecular forces that affect why oil doesnt dissolve in water
