Personally, I wouldnt say 'ignore' differences. Mainly because its a fact that there are differences, ignoring these differences doesnt really helps. Its more a recognition that there are differences, but more importantly that there is a common goal.

the united nations is on a big push for all religions to unite under one world religion where there is tolerence and acceptance of everyone. THe prob with this is that continuing numbers of christian denominations are losing their identities as chuirches and are losing important doctrines and teachings. e.g. the SDA church. Many young poeple are ignoring the call for indepenmdance and are rather following the crowd to create world harmony. As 'world harmony' would be a great thing, my church doctrine states that our church should be a church separted from the rest and to be known for who they are by the way the act e.g. conduct services, baptise etc. for more info just ask me

You could also state that in Australia, other factors have attributed to ecumenical initiatives, such as its physical isolation, meaning different denominations are more likely to work together for a common goal. Natural disasters etc, are also other reasons for ecumenical initiatives, in addition to the one's already mentioned.
