Record number of uni drop-outs

ONE in five students drop out of university after their first year, while in some courses less than half bother returning for their second year.

As 65,000 students consider university offers for 2008, an investigation by The Daily Telegraph reveals a record number are bailing out of courses, in some cases seduced by the jobs boom.

An analysis of retention rates for undergraduate bachelor degree students at NSW universities shows the University of Western Sydney had 1670 first-year students - 21 per cent - not returning for their second year in 2006.

Other higher education institutions are also struggling with Charles Sturt University losing 1572 students - 20.8 per cent of first-year students - and the University of New England lost 713 or 19.8 per cent.

The University of Technology lost 755 students, or 16.2 per cent, in their first year.

A lot of people who didn't get into their desired degrees use UWS as a transfer uni though, and how do we know they actually dropped out and not transfered? ....that 1 in 5 figure is way over-inflated

Some students classified as "dropouts" may have opted to begin another course at the same university or may return some years later, complicating the figures.

Universities Australia chief executive Dr Glenn Withers confirmed the numbers of first-year dropouts were at an all-time high. He put the average first-year dropout rate at a conservative 10 per cent.

They admit that their statistics don't account for everything and then they call the estimate by Withers conservative as it is smaller than their inaccurate statistics.

the absolute values are not relevant. one things for sure is that UWS have higher dropout rates.

UAI's are now overinflated compared to the TER's of yesteryears.

standards are dropping coz everyone thinks it a right to be able to goto university

its only natural for UWS to have a higher dropout. look at how many single mothers there are out there
