#1 advice for non english nerds in HSC english: write what gets you marks, not what you really think

im assuming this is for some reflection of a task done? if that's the case then talk about your 'intentions' and what you wanted to convey. dont leave any parts unexplained and try to yap the juice out of it. also use cause and effect language and talk about the affects of your intentions on the audience, or commentary you might be trying to make on society.

even where a reflection question does not explicitly ask you to reference your prescribed texts in mod c, ALWAYS make reference to it

Ok well there's quite a bit I heard from my English teacher about writing reflections, idk if it's anything good but yeah :/
  • Write in first person (some schools allow third person)
  • Use evaluative language + high modality language
  • Consider the use of examples (quotes) you chose from your piece. What is its purpose? What is the larger conceptual idea?
  • When detailing what techniques you use, be specific. What type of imagery, what type of tone.
  • Relate what you have learnt to what you have applied in your own piece. Have you been influenced by other texts? Have you learnt something from the unit you are studying in eng? (this kind of links back to the above comments where yes, it is rlly good to have quotes from your own piece AND your prescribed text to write what techniques or structural formatting etc. has inspired you into your own piece of writing
  • Use a range of techniques as your evidence (especially when referring to your prescribed text, try to get a variety and from different parts of the text)
  • Talk about your strengths. What did you skillfully apply/use?
The next part goes through like a rough typical reflection structure. The rough amount of sentences and number of quotes rlly depend if your reflection is hand in, if you have a lot of time or not a lot time.

INTRO
  • state your intentional purpose for your piece (large idea/concept) in relation to your task's question --> 2-3 sentences
  • state your intended effect (what did you want to audience to think, feel
  • your title of your piece may have a purposeful meaning (i don't know if you should, but you may choose to include it as apart of 'evidence' in ur reflection if it helps explores your ideas.
BODY PARAGRAPHS
If you task doesn't give you a lot of time to write, probably stick to 2 good quality paragraphs with approx. min. 2 quotes in each.
  • JUSTIFY why you have used the language techniques or stylistic features you used in your writing piece
  • This isn't at all a must do in how your reflection has to be but commonly (at least among the people ik) have recommended that...
    • Body Paragraph 1 --> usually contain the techniques that are major, are throughout the entirety of your piece, sometimes are referred to as macro techniques (focalisation, tone, setting, narrative voice, characterisation, allegory etc.)
    • Body Paragraph 2 --> usually contains figurative techniques, stylistic techniques, occasionally referred to as micro techniques (symbolism, simile, metaphor, different types of imagery, irony, truncated sentences etc.)
    • Note: Some techniques, although appearing to be micro techniques should rlly be placed in your first paragraph if the techniques contribute a lot into the purpose and delivery of your piece. Examples of this is extended metaphors, motifs, purpose of the structural form you have written in (linear, non-linear, cyclical), and the type of text you chose to write in (personal essay, memoir, autobiography, biography
