They are marked together but unoriginality is a subjective issue....

i would mark you down ;) hahaha
Nah, definitely not, even when doing school assessments I wasn't marked down. Even if half the state does the same text the only reason they would be marked down would be because you would get some really really excellent answers which the markers would subconciously compare to...well...i think so >.>

It's not the text's unoriginality so much (although, it certainly doesnt hurt to be different and original), it's the lack of individuality in the ANALYSIS and PERCEPTION of the text. Sure, 500000 people might use John Lennon's Imagine or LOTR for Journeys OR CNNN for "Telling the Truth", but if you elevate your analysis and take on it into a whole new sophisicated level, you will be rewarded for it. Sure, the new HSC IS standards based but English is a "subjectively" marked subject and making a good impression on themarker with your related text really doesnt hurt and it isnt an ardous task to leave behind the most popular related texts and break out into your own.

there have been several cases in recent years when centres have been noticeably marked down because lots of people were using the same related texts: in other words, it became clear that the teachers had just taught them what their 'found' texts would be in class. however, if u use the same text as everyone else but integrate or analysis it differently to everyone else, it'll make ur answer stand out more. so basically, avoid it if its something ur teacher has gone through with u.
