um my situation is, i wanna connect a laptop and desktop pc together....whats the cheapest one i could find do you think?

you don't need a router

all you need is a cross-over cable

if you really want to use a hardware device in between, a switch will also do the job

I can make one for free
just give me the specified length

but if you're too cheap to forout $5, that's just... sad

the thing is, if u have a laptop, in the long run it's probably better to get a switch and 2 straight-through cables. U can pick the cables up from $2 shops, the switch will cost u ~$50

the thing is, the laptop will be more accessible in other networks witha straight through cable, and will be easier to expand ur network if ever needed to.

no no...i need to buy a router specifically dont i? this is for sharing an internet connection, cos i dont wanna have my main comp all the time....whats the cheapest router?

For sharing without a computer on all the time, yes you need a router.

If price is your only concern, theres a couple bidding at $1 on ebay.....you might even have luck finding some falling out of a back of a truck for free.
